“선생님, more big이요 bigger요?”
옆에 있던 친구가 “당연히 bigger지!”라고 했는데, 질문한 학생 표정은 여전히 물음표였습니다.
왜 bigger인지 설명을 못 들었으니까요.
그래서 그날 수업 시간에 more most 사용법을 확실하게 정리해줬어요.
비교급 최상급 구분이 어렵다는 학생들이 생각보다 많거든요.
more와 most는 언제 쓰고, -er과 -est는 언제 붙이는 건지.

more와 most, 언제 쓰는 건가요
학생들에게 제일 먼저 알려주는 건 이거예요.
“단어 길이를 봐라.”
영어에서 “더 ~한”은 비교급이고, “가장 ~한”은 최상급이에요.
그런데 어떤 단어는 뒤에 -er, -est를 붙이고, 어떤 단어는 앞에 more, most를 붙이잖아요.
바로 이 부분에서 헷갈리는 거죠.
규칙은 생각보다 간단합니다.
짧은 단어(1음절)는 -er, -est를 붙이고, 긴 단어(3음절 이상)는 more, most를 앞에 써요.
2음절 단어는 둘 다 가능한 경우가 많은데, 확신이 없으면 more, most를 쓰는 게 안전합니다.
이렇게 설명하면 학생들이 “아, 그래서 bigger이고 more beautiful인 거예요?”라고 바로 감을 잡더라고요.
음절별 비교급 최상급 만드는 방법
수업 시간에 칠판에 이렇게 적어주면 학생들이 금방 익혀요.

한 학생이 “선생님, 그럼 2음절인데 -y로 안 끝나면요?”라고 물어봤어요. 좋은 질문이죠.
그럴 때는 more, most를 쓰는 게 안전해요.
famous는 more famous, most famous라고 쓰면 됩니다.
참고로 -y로 끝나는 단어는 y를 i로 바꾸고 -er, -est를 붙여요.
happy가 happyer가 아니라 happier인 이유가 바로 이것 때문이에요.

그래서 예문을 많이 보여줍니다.
소리 내서 읽어보라고 하면 훨씬 잘 기억하더라고요.
more 예문 (비교급)
This movie is more exciting than the last one.
이 영화가 저번 것보다 더 재밌어.
Math is more difficult than English for me.
나한테는 수학이 영어보다 더 어려워.
She speaks more fluently than before.
그녀는 예전보다 더 유창하게 말해.
most 예문 (최상급)
This is the most delicious pizza I’ve ever had.
이게 내가 먹어본 피자 중에서 가장 맛있어.
He is the most talented student in our class.
그는 우리 반에서 가장 재능 있는 학생이야.
학생들한테 “너희가 좋아하는 거로 문장 만들어봐”라고 하면 재밌는 예문들이 나와요.
“BTS is the most popular group in the world” 이런 식으로요.
직접 만들어보는 게 외우는 데 효과가 좋습니다.
불규칙 변화, 이건 외워야 해요
여기서 학생들이 가장 많이 틀리는 부분이 나옵니다.
어떤 단어들은 규칙을 안 따르고 완전히 다른 모양으로 바뀌거든요.

시험지 채점할 때 “more good”이라고 쓴 학생이 꼭 있어요.
안타깝지만 이건 틀린 표현이에요.
good의 비교급은 무조건 better입니다.
“more better”도 마찬가지로 틀려요.
better 자체가 이미 비교급이니까 more를 또 붙이면 안 됩니다.
이 부분은 규칙이 없어서 그냥 외워야 해요.
음절 세는 법, 손가락으로 해봐
“선생님, 음절이 뭐예요?” 이 질문 정말 많이 받아요.
음절은 발음할 때 입이 벌어지는 횟수라고 설명해줍니다.
학생들한테 이렇게 시켜봐요.
단어를 천천히 발음하면서 입이 열릴 때마다 손가락을 하나씩 접어보라고요.
big → 빅 (1번) → 1음절
hap-py → 해-피 (2번) → 2음절
beau-ti-ful → 뷰-티-풀 (3번) → 3음절
in-ter-est-ing → 인-터-레-스팅 (4번) → 4음절
처음에는 어색해하다가도 몇 번 해보면 바로 익숙해져요.
한 학생이 “아, 그래서 big은 bigger이고 beautiful은 more beautiful인 거예요?”라고 했을 때 정말 뿌듯했습니다.
